Historic Hillsborough Half Marathon

The inaugural Hillsborough Hillsborough Half Marathon occurs this weekend! Being a historic town, the race starts near the Orange County Courthouse and for a little over two miles passes distinctive homes and churches. The course follows the riverwalk along side the Eno River for a short section before climbing to its highest point along Occoneechee Mountain then descending back to the river. The next section heads west through Kings Highway Park to the turnaround back through the same park and Gold Park. The route returns to the previous short part of the riverwalk that is part of the Mountain to the Sea Trail and continues east towards the Occoneechee Speedway. A lap around the old NASCAR track then back to the courthouse for the finish. Besides the half marathon, there is also a 5K that goes through town, along the riverwalk and back to the courthouse.

Both races are USATF certified with multiple classes at five year intervals for runners 20 to 79 and an 80+ class. For those less than twenty, there is a single ninteen and under class for the half marathon and a nine and under, ten to twelve, thirteen to fifteen and sixteen to nineteen classes for the 5K. The event is run by the Hillsborough Running Club and benefits Girls on the Run. The race begins at 7:00 am.
