This weekend is the Umstead Gravel Grinder which takes place on the gravel covered multi-use trails within Umstead State Park. Riders have a choice of a 100 mile or 50 mile distance with each lap through the park being sixteen and two thirds miles. A lap starts at Camp Lapihio and goes towards Mid-Gate. After a westward turn onto Reedy Creek Trail, the course goes to turnaround near the Old Reedy Creek Road Gate then goes the length of the park to the South Turkey Creek Trail near the Trenton Road Gate. The first loop begins on the South Turkey Trail and Cedar Ridge Trail before returning briefly to the Reedy Creek Trail. The lap continues on the second loop of the Graylyn Trail, North Turkey Creek Trail and Cedar Ridge Trail before returning again to the Reedy Creek Trail to Mid-Gate and back to camp.
The event is run by Triangle Off-Road Cyclists and benefits the groups trail building activities. The race begins at 8:30 am and last official finisher completes the event by 6:30 pm. There are four categories Open Men (49 and Under), Open Men (50 and Over)
Open Women (18 to 39) and Open Women (40 and Over) with the top three finishes in each receiving prizes.
